Introduction

PUBLICATIONS

Our philosophy

Consistent with its declared vocation, to promote and spread American studies, Centro Studi Americanistici “Circolo Amerindiano” could not exempt itself from publishing activity.

Witness of the various moments of profound transformation of techniques and supports, which from the second half of the Seventies of the last century to today, have touched the publishing world, from offset to digital, from paper to online publication, the Centro Studi throughout its history «has given rise to a series of publications which, on the one hand, have accompanied the creation of itinerant exhibitions, with the aim of divulging and making known the heritage of the Centro Studi; on the other hand have marked one of the purpose of the “Circolo Amerindiano” to promote and spread the knowledge of the peoples and cultures of the American continent, of yesterday and today. Precisely through the knowledge and scientific study of the various human experiences, the conviction arises that it is possible to carry out a meeting with Otherness with a critical sense, responsibility and with the awareness of having made a contribution, albeit minimal, to the struggles that the native peoples bring forward daily for survival, as stated in the same summary information sheet of our Centro Studi. It could be said that the monographs represent intercultural education paths, offering overviews and insights on historical, social, political, cultural, in general, issues of the American world, from the first population to the present day» (Rossi Th. Other publications, in “Thule”, special edition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the foundation).

The precursors

Everything began in 1978 with a mimeographed internal publication, the Bullettin (18 issues)Bollettino 17, completed in 1993. A Newsletter, from 1979 to 1983 (27 issues) followed by various attempts, between 1983 and 1986 (Nuestra América – Nossa America and, finally, the only issue of American Information).

During this period, other publications were also made (Prehistoric America, Pre-Columbian Mexico, Mayan Culture, Elements for the study of pre-Columbian cultures, A comparative study for missionary intervention in Brazil from the 16th century to the present day) – monographs, still mimeographed with internal circulation, for use in the History of the Americas course, before the public activities of the Centro Studi.

Exhibition catalogs

The approach of 1992 and the V centenary of the fatal journey of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic offered new and more important editorial challenges. “Circolo Amerindiano” presented itself at this appointment with many initiatives, from the issue of an official document, to the organization of conferences, debates and, above all, many exhibitions of its mostra didattica “Teocuicatl: the sacred song”, which between 1990 and 1992 it has been presented in many Italian cities, with thousands of visitors. In this exhibition with regard to the triumphalism of the “discovery”, prevailing then in the celebrations of the V Centenary, a new reading was proposed, in which the pre-Columbian re-emerged in all its autonomous millenary magnificence and the journey of the caravels was configured, in the first place, as the inauguration of the greatest tragedy in human history.

LThe exhibitions thus provided an important editorial period made of publications which, far from being the normal exhibition catalog, reflected the essence of the exhibition itself and became «Synthetic history manuals that offer an excursus on Amerindian cultures to tell pieces of a history of the humanity sometimes “denied”, forgotten, or “exalted” in its most evident, most impactful but not “realistic” aspects» (Rossi Th. Other publications, in””Thule”, special edition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the foundation).

From 1990 to 2000 the following were published as catalogs of as many exhibitions:

Active publications

The Centro Study today has 4 lines of active publications which are published both in paper and online on the pages amerindiano.org and www.circoloamerindianosalerno.it/. The most recent are accessible online to everyone, the others, always online, are on a page reserved for members. All of them are freely available in the American Studies Library “Tullio Seppilli”/ Biblioteca Specializzata in Americanistica “Tullio Seppilli”, in the Perugia headquarter.

Thule, rivista italiana di studi americanistici. Since 1993, our proposal to open a real American journal was collected by Tullio Seppilli, at that time involved with the foundation of AM – Medical Anthropology. Seppilli took up the proposal and together with Rosalba Proietti Pizzi began the editorial process which, from the definition of the typographic and content aspects, to the formation of Editorial Committees to the editorial structure, led 3 years later, in 1996, to the birth of Thule, rivista italiana di studi americanistici. Shortly afterwards the first issue of AM will also be released and for many years the two magazines will mark together, like sister publications, even with identical publishing house and identical typography.

Quaderni di Thule and Collana di Studi Americanistici. In Thule, which became the scientific body of the “Circolo Amerindiano”, in 1991 the Quaderni di Thule and, starting from 2012, the Collana di Studi Americanistici were born with the project to publish monographic works.

Atti delle Giornate di Letteratura Latinoamericana. In 2007, the product of the newborn (2005) headquarter in Salerno, the CD publication of Atti delle Giornate di Letteratura Latinoamericana began, a collateral event and an integral part of the International Congress of American Studies, which continues with a punctual annual deadline and is presented during the following Congress.
