Jornadas de Americanística


Colloquium on four relevant questions of contemporary Americanistic studies


The UNAM’s Anthropological Research Institute, the UAM-Xochimilco’s Social Relations Department, and the Mexican office of the Centro Studi Americanistici “Circolo Amerindiano”,  make a call to all academics interested in participating in the Jornadas de Americanística, Colloquium on four relevant questions of contemporary Americanistic studies which will take place from November 26 to 30, 2018 at the Anthropological Research Institute’s Auditorium at the UNAM’s Campus.

The proposed subjects are:

  1. The different types of violence: physical, institutional and cultural. Coordinated by Dr Mario Ortega (
  2. Travelers, migrants, displaced and returned migrants. Coordinated by Dr Guadalupe Díaz Tepepa ( and Dr Beatríz Calvo Pontón (
  3. The scientific study of cultural heritage. Coordinated Luis Alberto Barba Pigarrón (
  4. The diversity, interculturality and rituality found in the feeding. Coordinated by Dr. Luis Alberto Vargas Guadarrama ( and Dr. Sarah Bak-Geller (
  5. Non-thematic session (

Each speaker will have 20 minutes for their presentation. After 4 presentations a space of 30 minutes will be given for discussion and comments.

The intention is to present the academics’ experience on each one of the subjects, pursuing clear conclusions and fruitful discussions at the end of each session. The experience of Perugia’s congresses indicate that this type of presentations stimulates the creation of work groups with common interests.

The presentations will have to be submitted in writing the day of the inauguration, as they will be evaluated by a committee for their electronic publication. The authors with accepted papers will have a month to include the relevant commentaries that were given at the colloquium and by the evaluations.

In order to subscribe to the Colloquium, fill in the format (go to the format here) with the correspondent data required, including a written abstract of maximum 800 characters with spaces (with title, author(s) name(s), institution and e-mail). The deadline to receive applications is Friday, September 25th. On Friday, September 28st, at the latest, applicants will be informed if their presentation was accepted or not. On Monday, October 15th, the provisional program will be sent and comments will be received until Friday, October 19thin order to publish the definitive program on Monday, October 21st.

Monday, October 05th will be the deadline for the reception of the fee’s payment: 150 euros or 75 euros for associates of the Centro Studi Americanistici “Circolo Amerindiano”  or researchers from the Instituto de Investigaciones Antropológicas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Xochimilco or posible coauthors. Jornadas de americanística

Unfortunately, we cannot offer any kind of economic support. Nevertheless, we will soon send a list of well communicated hotels, near subway or bus stations connecting to the Campus. We will organize accessible meals at the Institute’s cafe or at the Universum Museum’s restaurant.
